A Brit abroad: 20 years and counting for Dave Simkin
What’s your history with Lotus?
A guy called Arnie Johnson hired me in 2000 to be a Field Service Engineer on the west coast. I’d worked with the Lotus Sport team on the X180R cars prior to joining, working with fantastic people like Roger Becker, John Miles and Alan Nobbs, along with great drivers like Doc Bundy and of course Paul Newman.
Where are you based now?
Same place, Anaheim in California.
What does your job consist of day to day?
I have been handling the tech support and tech training for the USA since the Esprit and M100 days. I am the technical point of contact for all the service departments in the USA and Canada.
What’s the best thing about your job?
All the great people I get to work with at Lotus, both stateside and in the UK
What was the high point for you in 2019?
Being included in the Evija hypercar launch at The Quail during Monterey Car Week in August. Seeing and hearing all the positive feedback about the car, getting to interact with the executives from the UK – it was fantastic.
What are you looking forward to most in 2020?
Last year we had a retailer conference in New York, and it was great to see the enthusiasm of our dealers when they heard about the future plans for Lotus. This year I’m looking forward to helping make that happen.
In your 20 years, what has been the best day ever at Lotus?
My first visit to Hethel. It was in the year I joined, and I remember walking through the door by the old gift shop, seeing Colin Chapman’s picture on the wall and thinking how lucky I was to be part of such a great company.
